Health Screening is a must for all of our adult patients!
If it’s your 50th or 65th birthday, we want you to make a health checkup part of your celebration.
“There are a lot of health factors that increasingly come into play as we age,” said Paul Bachman, M.D., a medical director for Hudson Headwaters. “One of the best ways to ensure that you stay healthy is to take advantage of the medical screening procedures that have been developed over the past few decades.”
Listed below are some of the screening procedures generally recommended for men and women as they turn 50 or 65.
“These are general guidelines,” Dr. Bachman advises. “Consideration for some of these procedures will also vary based on your medical history, including family history. It’s a good idea to discuss what is right for you with your own physician. There’s no denying the old saying: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
When you turn 50:
For men and women --
• Lipid (cholesterol) profile
• Colon screening (for colorectal cancer and polyps)
• General physical examination
For women only --
• Mammograms (annually)
• Bone density scanning to check for osteoporosis
• PAP smear (unless previous hysterectomy)
For men only --
• Prostate exam with PSA measurement (annually)
When you turn 65:
For men and women –
• Flu shot (annually)
• Pneumovax (a vaccine that guards against pneumonia)
• Lipid profile (cholesterol)
• Colon screening (colorectal cancer and polyps)
• General physical examination
• Abdominal aorta ultrasound (if you’ve been a smoker)
For women only --
• Bone density scanning to check for osteoporosis (every 2 years)
For men only --
• Prostate exam with PSA measurement (annually)
